Pick Two »

We’ve all heard the old production adage “good, fast, or cheap… pick two.”

If you want something done well and done fast, it’s gonna cost you. If you want to save money and still get a quality product, it’s gonna take forever. If it’s done fast and cheap, well… it’s gonna suck.

I’ve come to realize that as as single guy, there is a corollary to this immutable law that applies to the dating pool of women in Los Angeles:

“Attractive, intelligent, or sane… pick two.”

That’s right. I said it…. (and I’ve got the little black book to prove it.)

If a woman is beautiful and intelligent, experience has proven time and again that she’s also batshit insane. When I meet an attractive woman without any issues, she inevitably turns out to be as vacuous as Forrest Gump. And of course, the ones who aren’t crazy and have a good head on their shoulders, well… bless their hearts, they don’t have much going on in the looks department.

In considering these sets of trade-offs, I’ll be the first to admit that hot, smart and crazy is a pretty decent combo… it’s been my poison of preference these past few years. It’s always a fun ride (albeit a roller-coaster), but one that eventually derails in a shower of sparks.

Now, a common choice for the average single guy in LA is to settle for the placid boredom of a woman who’s beautiful but not-too-bright. I can’t do that… as well as I know myself, it’s just not my style. For better or worse, I have to be with an intelligent woman, and as such, I’m always picking between the beautiful and the drama-free.

And I’m sure that all three traits do exist in a single woman. Unfortunately, she ain’t the type to stay single for long. Guys who find this holy trinity in a girl tend to start shoppin’ for a ring.

I know I would.

Now, in the interest of fairness to all you women out there, I suppose that there’s also a similar corollary that applies to men.

Perhaps something like, “handsome, rich, or loyal… pick two.”

Cynical, I know… but if you break it down, you can’t deny the underlying honesty of it all.
